The history of NOMOS Glashutte

A lot of people associate NOMOS Glashutte watches with simplicity, functionality, and an understated design approach. But what most of them don’t know is that it is also a watch brand with an unconventional backstory. Roland Schwertner, a photographer, and keen computer technician founded the company in 1990. The watch manufacturer started producing timepieces right after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. Even though it is one of the youngest brands, you can find its production headquarters in the most important city in the history of watchmaking, which is in Glashutte. It is a small town composed of only about 7 000 people. Aside from NOMOS Glashutte, it is also home to other luxury watch brands like A. Lange & Sohne, and Moritz Grossmann.

First collections of NOMOS Glashutte

It was in 1991 when the company launched its first watch collections namely Ludwig, Orion, Tetra, and Tangente. Each of them had a Bauhaus style designed by Suzzane Gunther. The Tetra was the most unique collection among the four due to its case shape and diameter. It was available in a square measuring 29.5 mm while the other three collections had 35 mm round cases. The small sizes of its watch models were a revolutionary undertaking since large and chunky ones were the norm. If you are wondering what was the best selling and most popular collection, it was the Tangente. A lot of watch collectors loved and appreciated its classic look and old-school design.

Production of own in-house movements

NOMOS Glashutte did everything to have the capability to produce in-house movements. It was mainly because they wanted to stamp the name Glashutte on their watches. To do that, it must manufacture watches with at least 50 percent of its value in the town of Glashutte. It was a challenge but the company did it from 1992 to 2005 when it utilized ETA and Peseux ebauche movements. To improve how they look and function, NOMOS Glashutte did some modifications like refinishing the crown and barrel wheels and adding stripes on the bridges. To make them resistant to oxidation, it added rhodium materials to the plates.

When ETA knew these modifications, it requested NOMOS to stop using its name from their movements. It allowed the company to add more upgrades since its watches no longer carried the name ETA. In 2005, it released its first collection with movements made entirely in-house. After years of operating, the company finally earned the right to stamp the term Glashutte on its watch models.

The continuing growth of NOMOS Glashutte

NOMOS Glashutte continues to grow its business and maintains its position in the industry as one of the leaders in watchmaking. In 219, it reached one of its milestones which was to achieve a 24$ growth. Nowadays, it is the largest manufacturer of mechanical watches in Germany. It has also the highest sales in the German market for its domestic mechanical watches. Aside from achieving success in the said country, it is now slowly attaining the pinnacle of success in the international market. It delivers its timepieces to more than 40 countries.
